Anxiety Disorders

Although having anxiety from time to time is a normal part of life, those with anxiety disorders often feel consistent symptoms such as feeling restless, hyperventilation, difficulty sleeping, increased heart rate, and of course, persistent worries. It is common for those with anxiety to also experience symptoms of depression.

Major Depressive Disorder

Because it is a mood disorder, depression can have a big impact on people's lives. One with depression may experience a great loss of interest in life, as well as constant feelings of sadness with no specific trigger. Those that experience depression may be irritable, have a lack of energy, and have trouble concentrating.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder occurs when an individual experiences periods of extreme highs, called mania, and extreme lows, or major depression. Periods of mania or euphoria may cause an individual to feel jumpy, energetic, and well rested. On the other hand, periods of depression may cause an individual to experience slowed behavior, fatigue, or excessive and inappropriate guilt.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a cognitive psychotic disorder that causes individuals to hallucinate, have delusions, and possibly have impaired motor abilities. Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that can heavily interfere with one's way of life. Unfortunately, this disorder can not be cured and individuals with it must consistently be treated over their lifespan.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Although often seen in war veterans, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, can be diagnosed in anyone that has experienced severe trauma prior to having symptoms such as intrusive thoughts and flashbacks, avoidance of different people or activities, and alterations in mood and actions. Those with PTSD can experience these symptoms for months following their traumatic event and can resort to different resources to alleviate the pain.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive disorder, or OCD, can be seen in those with symptoms under the categories of obsessions and compulsions, or both. Those with obsessions may experience consistent and repeated thoughts that can cause severe anxiety and harmful habits or ideas. Compulsions are repeated behaviors or urges that stem from obsessive thoughts. ODC is life consuming, and can cause a lot of frustration in the individual's life.

Eating Disorders

Although many people believe that eating disorders are self-induced, they are actually very real and serious illnesses. There are a variety of eating disorders that can be diagnosed in all ages, but a few common ones are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, and Binge Eating. Each disorder affects individual differently and is associated with poor body image and disturbed eating habits. These disorders can be fatal.
